Fine Persian Moud (937263)
HANDMADE RUG - This large Persian rug is from the Moud region. The rug is unique with a foundation pile of wool and is handmade, with a tasseled edge. The city of Moud is situated south of Mashad and south of Birdjan. The carpets from Moud often have a Herati pattern, with or without a centrally placed medallion. They are sometimes divided into Moud Mahi and Moud Garden. The first one mentioned, Mahi, often has a beige colour with a light red or blue nuance and a star shaped medallion. The other, Garden, reminds one about Bakhtiar carpets, illustrated with a curvilinear garden motif. The weavers uses double wefts and the workmanship is often of good quality. In both types silk is used to bring out the lustre in the pile. Other carpets from this area are Birjand and Kashmar.

HANDMADE RUG - The Bijar Rugs are known for their painstakingly elaborate, visually in-depth weaves. They commonly feature this marvelous full colour bouquet of different floral images. The detail is quite astounding when considering the amount colour involved. Sarouk commonly carry a regal European look. What is most striking and interesting about this rug is that how much colour has been imbedded in and around the main tone of that rich red/crimson. This is a unique interpretation of a Bijar; this rug has the presence of a more oriental piece. Basically based on red, the rug offers a vibrant contrast of beige, peach, black and blue to give it a dramatic beauty. The traditional Bijar design with flowery and leafy detail makes it look stunning. This is definitely a steal for its price. Ziegler (Red) (261644)
HANDMADE RUG - Ziegler is the name of a design rather than an actual city or tribe. Ziegler design rugs are sometimes known as Chobi rugs or Peshawar rugs. A German company based in Manchester (England), Ziegler and Co. commissioned the development of the original Ziegler rugs back in 1883. Using leading designers and master weavers from Iran and Europe, Ziegler and Co. managed to create a design using softer palettes than those typically found in Persia. Ziegler rugs were designed with the western market in mind and fit perfectly into almost any home. Based on a softer version of the Sultanabad design their muted colours using vegetable dyes and simple, yet striking pattern fit well with modern neutral colour schemes and both contemporary or traditional furniture. The weaving of Zeigler rugs began in the Arak provence, however, they are now made all over the Persian region. Zeiglers have re-introduced vegetable dyes back into Persian & Oriental weaving after the popular use of chemical dyes since the start of the 20th century. Although their knot count is not generally high (around 80-120 KPSI), the hand-spun Ghazni or Himalayan wool used is of high quality and the structure very durable. Ziegler rugs are possibly the most popular and sought after handmade rugs in the UK due to their gentle tones and softer patterns - there are not many rooms that would not be improved by a Ziegler rug. Afghan Khan (Red) (124944)
HANDMADE RUG - Afghanistan is one of the leading producers of handmade rugs in the world. Afghan rugs are genuine, charming and usually phenomenally inexpensive. One of the most exotic and distinctive of all oriental rugs is the Shindand and Adraskan (named after local Afghan villages) woven in the Hairat area in western Afghanistan. Strangely elongated human and animal figures are their signature look. Most of the weavers in Afghanistan are the Ersari Turkman. But other smaller group such as Chub Bash and Kizil Ayaks are also in the line of weaving rugs. In addition Uzbeks, Kyrgyz, Kazakhs and Arabs label their rug according to their ethic group. Various and other natural dyes are used to produce the rich colours. As a chemical colour they use copper sulphate, ferrous sulphate, or tin and urine. Tribal rugs are almost always done on the horizontal or ground loom. This is due to the fact the nomads rarely remain in one location for more then two months. A Turkman woman will usually take at least six month to finish a rug 6 feet by 4 feet. The loom there fore can be set up and taken down four to six times before a rug or kelim is finished colour of Afghan rugs are mainly Reds (Madder-root of modern plant- ranges from reds to Orange and Purple. Tabriz (196877)
HANDMADE RUG - Tabriz is the capital of the province of Eastern Azerbaijan. Like Mashad on the eastern side of Iran, its present apparent remoteness belies the fact that when the country was larger it had an important role.Indeed, before World War I, it was Iran's largest city. Much of the Caucasus belonged to Iran, which was administered from Tabriz. There are remains of mosques from the 15th century, but perhaps the most important landmarks are the bazaars, for trade has always been of great importance in Tabriz. Indeed, its geographical position meant that for a long time goods exported from Iran to Europe went via Tabriz, and the revival of the carpet industry in the 19th century is due largely to Tabriz merchants. There are now a huge variety of carpets made in Tabriz, from extremely fine to very coarse pieces. The weavers have great skill, and are aided by a hook-like implement, which they use instead of the fingers for tying knots. The warps and wefts are cotton, the pile wool, often with highlights of silk that can be found in the finest pieces. The colours of the finer carpets are delicate and refined. The coarsest qualities are brightly coloured and rarely exported. A wide variety of designs are seen: copies of classical designs, re-workings of old motifs, and pictorial or figurative treatments. The most famous weaver was Hajji Jaliliz, who worked at the turn of the 20th century. FREE DELIVERY ON THIS RUG within UK mainland.
