HANDMADE RUG - The Qashquai weave several types of rugs. A characteristic product can be recognized by its all-wool construction, heavy ribbing on the reverse, strong deep colours (particularly the red), and the use of traditional motifs such as the 'Hashing' or crab. Typically, the designs are geometrical with a row of three of five medallions down the middle of the rug, or in the centre and corners. The whole field is generally covered with small geometric motifs. Qashqai rugs average 70 to 170 knots per square inch. Though all traditional examples of Qashqai rugs have all wool construction including wool wefts and warps, newer village pieces may have cotton wefts and are generally more coarsely woven. The Qashquai are famous also for their artefacts: horse blankets, saddlebags, ropes, etc. The products of other tribes, such as the Khamseh and Lori, are often confused with those of the Qashquai.

Unlike Hamedan rugs, which tend to be geometrical in design with large blocks of colour, Malayer rugs are more delicate, often with central medallions. The borders are particularly attractively drawn, often with a cluster of white motifs following the line of the main tendrils (or the outline of the central medallions) giving a lace effect. The village of Tafresh, to the northeast of Malayer in Arak province, produces similar carpets. Jozan and Manizan produce perhaps the best rugs in the Malayer area: they are double wafted and more rigid, using natural dyes. HANDMADE RUG - Afghanistan is one of the leading producers of handmade rugs in the world. Afghan rugs are genuine, charming and usually phenomenally inexpensive. One of the most exotic and distinctive of all oriental rugs is the Shindand and Adraskan (named after local Afghan villages) woven in the Hairat area in western Afghanistan. Strangely elongated human and animal figures are their signature look. Most of the weavers in Afghanistan are the Ersari Turkman. But other smaller group such as Chub Bash and Kizil Ayaks are also in the line of weaving rugs. In addition Uzbeks, Kyrgyz, Kazakhs and Arabs label their rug according to their ethic group. Various and other natural dyes are used to produce the rich colours. As a chemical colour they use copper sulphate, ferrous sulphate, or tin and urine. Tribal rugs are almost always done on the horizontal or ground loom. This is due to the fact the nomads rarely remain in one location for more then two months. A Turkman woman will usually take at least six month to finish a rug 6 feet by 4 feet.
