Tabriz (194567)
HANDMADE RUG - Tabriz is the capital of the province of Eastern Azerbaijan. Like Mashad on the eastern side of Iran, its present apparent remoteness belies the fact that when the country was larger it had an important role.Indeed, before World War I, it was Iran's largest city. Much of the Caucasus belonged to Iran, which was administered from Tabriz. There are remains of mosques from the 15th century, but perhaps the most important landmarks are the bazaars, for trade has always been of great importance in Tabriz. Indeed, its geographical position meant that for a long time goods exported from Iran to Europe went via Tabriz, and the revival of the carpet industry in the 19th century is due largely to Tabriz merchants. There are now a huge variety of carpets made in Tabriz, from extremely fine to very coarse pieces. The weavers have great skill, and are aided by a hook-like implement, which they use instead of the fingers for tying knots. The warps and wefts are cotton, the pile wool, often with highlights of silk that can be found in the finest pieces. The colours of the finer carpets are delicate and refined. The coarsest qualities are brightly coloured and rarely exported. A wide variety of designs are seen: copies of classical designs, re-workings of old motifs, and pictorial or figurative treatments. The most famous weaver was Hajji Jaliliz, who worked at the turn of the 20th century. FREE DELIVERY ON THIS RUG within UK mainland.

The Qashqai are primarily descendants of the Turkmen and Ersari tribes, many are pastoral nomads who roam depending on the season moving from the Isfahan province to south of Shiraz, persia. The Qashqai weave several types of rugs. A characteristic product can be recognized by its all-wool construction, heavy ribbing on the reverse, strong deep colours (particularly the red), and the use of traditional motifs such as the 'Hashing' or crab. Typically, the designs are geometrical with a row of three of five medallions down the middle of the rug, or in the centre and corners. The whole field is generally covered with small geometric motifs. The Qashqai rugs average 70 to 170 knots per square inch. Traditional Qashqai rugs have all wool construction including wool wefts and warps. The Qashqai are famous also for their artefacts: horse blankets, saddlebags, ropes, etc. The products of other tribes, such as the Khamseh and Lori, are often confused with those of the Qashqai. Ziegler (Beige) (265714)
HANDMADE RUG - Ziegler is the name of a design rather than an actual city or tribe. Ziegler design rugs are sometimes known as Chobi rugs or Peshawar rugs. A German company based in Manchester (England), Ziegler and Co. commissioned the development of the original Ziegler rugs back in 1883. Using leading designers and master weavers from Iran and Europe, Ziegler and Co. managed to create a design using softer palettes than those typically found in Persia. Ziegler rugs were designed with the western market in mind and fit perfectly into almost any home. Based on a softer version of the Sultanabad design their muted colours using vegetable dyes and simple, yet striking pattern fit well with modern neutral colour schemes and both contemporary or traditional furniture. The weaving of Zeigler rugs began in the Arak provence, however, they are now made all over the Persian region. Zeiglers have re-introduced vegetable dyes back into Persian & Oriental weaving after the popular use of chemical dyes since the start of the 20th century. Although their knot count is not generally high (around 80-120 KPSI), the hand-spun Ghazni or Himalayan wool used is of high quality and the structure very durable. Ziegler rugs are possibly the most popular and sought after handmade rugs in the UK due to their gentle tones and softer patterns - there are not many rooms that would not be improved by a Ziegler rug.
