HANDMADE RUG - Malayer is a town of southeast of Hamedan on the road to Arak. Its position in relation to these towns is significant, for its carpets exhibit characteristics of both Sarouk and Hamedan. Several villages in the area also produce rugs.Most Malayer rugs are single wafted; resulting in the white cotton warps being visible on the reverse. Unlike Hamedan rugs, which tend to be geometrical in design with large blocks of colour, Malayer rugs are more delicate, often with central medallions. The borders are particularly attractively drawn, often with a cluster of white motifs following the line of the main tendrils (or the outline of the central medallions) giving a lace effect. The village of Tafresh, to the northeast of Malayer in Arak province, produces similar carpets. Jozan and Manizan produce perhaps the best rugs in the Malayer area: they are double wafted and more rigid, using natural dyes. The natural colours are both clear and strong. Good wool quality and Turkish knots make the carpets durable and they have a good reputation.In newer carpets, made after 1925, the warp is of cotton, with synthetic colours that are bleached and fewer and simplified patterns are used. HANDMADE RUG - Sumak is a comparatively rare type of Kilim, deriving its name from the old town of SHEMAKJA. Sumak is NOT a Kilim. However, both have flat-woven style. Sumak has embroidered and its embroidery threads are not cut off at the back. Sumak has a shaggy, erratic collection of loose ends or strands of wool. The wefts strands (serving a decorative role rather than the structural role of knotted carpets) are threaded through a number of warp strands and then looped back. All Sumak have geometric pattern with many tribal motifs all around. Usually the motifs are small birds. Sumak are excellent with contemporary, traditional and modern decors.

A German company based in Manchester (England), Ziegler and Co. commissioned the development of the original Ziegler rugs back in 1883.
