The designs are typically curvilinear and floral in their pattern but many are woven to a pictorial scene, often a tree of life design. Producing some of the most beautiful rugs not only in Iran but in the world, with a high knot counts, Qum rugs are generally expensive for their size, which tends to be fairly small to medium sized. The materials are of a high quality whether they are made from luscious silk or soft wool. The motifs inside the compartments can consist of pictorials, vases, hunting scenes, and botehs all in one rug. The colours used in Qum rugs are as diverse as the designs. The overall appearance could either be pale with background and border colours such as ivory, champagne, turquoise and light green, or it could be dark with background colours such as dark blue and even sometimes red. These rugs are woven from durable local wool and the colours are achieved mostly by using natural dyes. Most of the time Dark red and powerful blue predominate, with ivory as a contrasting colour. Other colours such as soft green, blue and brown are found in newer carpets. The patterns vary, with many geometric, floral and overall Herati designs being used.
