HANDMADE RUG - Kashan produces carpets in both wool and silk. The former have cotton warps and blue cotton wefts. Several qualities are produced, but most Kashan carpets are quite finely knotted. All-over and medallion designs are produced; the shape of the Kashan medallion is distinctive; it is formed of alternating curved lines and right angles. The commonest scheme is a red field with a blue medallion, with subsidiary details in other colours. The borders of Kashan carpets are also distinctive. Persian Tabriz (6021-98s)
HANDMADE RUG - Tabriz is the capital of the province of Eastern Azerbaijan. Like Mashad on the eastern side of Persian, its present apparent remoteness belies the fact that when the country was larger it had an important role. There are now a huge variety of carpets made in Tabriz, from extremely fine to very coarse pieces. The weavers have great skill, and are aided by a hook-like implement, which they use instead of the fingers for tying knots. The warps and wefts are cotton, the pile wool, often with highlights of silk that can be found in the finest pieces. The colours of the finer carpets are delicate and refined. What makes them so specail is not just the beauty of the motifs themselves but the consistency throughout their rugs. Tabriz feel almost regal to the touch. The central circled medalion here exudes a feel of eastern opulence, yet this rug will subtly lye with its mixture of delicate colours. Will satisfy those with a keen eye for traditional decor. Tabriz (194542)
HANDMADE RUG - Tabriz is the capital of the province of Eastern Azerbaijan. Like Mashad on the eastern side of Iran, its present apparent remoteness belies the fact that when the country was larger it had an important role.Indeed, before World War I, it was Iran's largest city. Much of the Caucasus belonged to Iran, which was administered from Tabriz. There are remains of mosques from the 15th century, but perhaps the most important landmarks are the bazaars, for trade has always been of great importance in Tabriz. Indeed, its geographical position meant that for a long time goods exported from Iran to Europe went via Tabriz, and the revival of the carpet industry in the 19th century is due largely to Tabriz merchants. The coarsest qualities are brightly coloured and rarely exported. A wide variety of designs are seen: copies of classical designs, re-workings of old motifs, and pictorial or figurative treatments. The most famous weaver was Hajji Jaliliz, who worked at the turn of the 20th century. FREE DELIVERY ON THIS RUG within UK mainland.

Fine Persian Yalameh (937271)
HANDMADE RUG - Yalameh is the name given to the colorful southern Iranian carpets woven primarily in and around the village of Aliabad in the southern Iranian province of Fars. Pieces from this origin were formerly called Shekarlu, but they were very rare. They were traditionally more colorful than other southern Iranian pieces, the palettes of which were restricted to reds and dark blues. In recent years, the supply of Shekarlu rugs had become restricted. Then, in the 1960's and 70's, a new type of rug appeared on the market. These were Yalameh. They were as colorful as the Shekarlu rugs, but with a stronger emphasis on blues. The weave and designs are generally more regular than those of Sherkalu rugs. They share many of the characteristics of tribal pieces; made of 100% wool with a fondness for bright colour and geometrical designs. However the wool, though characteristically soft and lustrous, is machine spun and the colors show more variety than is usual for tribal rugs, with soft shades - of red, pink, blue green and yellow. All the motifs however are entirely traditional and all sizes are produced. Other weaving center which come within the general category of Yalameh are Shekarlu.

Persian Qum (s317)
HANDMADE RUG - The holy city of Qum (Qom) is located 100km south of Tehran in the centre of Iran, is rich in history. Although not traditionally a centre of production, rugs woven in the past hundred years rival those of the best quality on the market today. The majority of Qum rugs are fairly small in size and use very fine wool which is densely knotted making extremely decorative rugs. Many silk rugs are made in Qum and hang with pride on their proud owners' walls. The designs are typically curvilinear and floral in their pattern but many are woven to a pictorial scene, often a tree of life design. Producing some of the most beautiful rugs not only in Iran but in the world, with a high knot counts, Qum rugs are generally expensive for their size, which tends to be fairly small to medium sized. The materials are of a high quality whether they are made from luscious silk or soft wool. The motifs inside the compartments can consist of pictorials, vases, hunting scenes, and botehs all in one rug. The colours used in Qum rugs are as diverse as the designs. The overall appearance could either be pale with background and border colours such as ivory, champagne, turquoise and light green, or it could be dark with background colours such as dark blue and even sometimes red. Red, blue and green are also used as motif colours. FREE DELIVERY ON THIS RUG within UK mainland.

Fine Sumak (213343)
HANDMADE RUG - Sumak is a comparatively rare type of Kilim, deriving its name from the old town of SHEMAKJA. Sumak is NOT a Kilim. However, both have flat-woven style. The wefts strands (serving a decorative role rather than the structural role of knotted carpets) are threaded through a number of warp strands and then looped back. All Sumak have geometric pattern with many tribal motifs all around. Usually the motifs are small birds. Sumak are excellent with contemporary, traditional and modern decors.

Ziegler (Red) (263802)
HANDMADE RUG - Ziegler is the name of a design rather than an actual city or tribe. Ziegler design rugs are sometimes known as Chobi rugs or Peshawar rugs. A German company based in Manchester (England), Ziegler and Co. commissioned the development of the original Ziegler rugs back in 1883. Using leading designers and master weavers from Iran and Europe, Ziegler and Co. managed to create a design using softer palettes than those typically found in Persia. Ziegler rugs were designed with the western market in mind and fit perfectly into almost any home. Based on a softer version of the Sultanabad design their muted colours using vegetable dyes and simple, yet striking pattern fit well with modern neutral colour schemes and both contemporary or traditional furniture. The weaving of Zeigler rugs began in the Arak provence, however, they are now made all over the Persian region. Zeiglers have re-introduced vegetable dyes back into Persian & Oriental weaving after the popular use of chemical dyes since the start of the 20th century. Although their knot count is not generally high (around 80-120 KPSI), the hand-spun Ghazni or Himalayan wool used is of high quality and the structure very durable. Ziegler rugs are possibly the most popular and sought after handmade rugs in the UK due to their gentle tones and softer patterns - there are not many rooms that would not be improved by a Ziegler rug. Persian Heriz (Red) (111650)
HANDMADE RUG - Heris Rug is a type of Persian rug from the area of Heris in northwest Iran northeast of Tabriz. The Heris Rug is produced in the villages of the slopes of Mount Sabalan. It is an extremely durable hard-wearing rug and the Heris rug has now passed Bijar Rugs as the Iron Rug of Iran. Heris are thick, tough, and often inexpensive rugs that appeal strongly to the US market. Part of the reason for the toughness of Heris carpets is that Mount Sabalan is sitting on a major deposit of Copper. Trace copper in the drinking water of the sheep produces high quality wool. The copper makes the wool stronger and far more resilient than wool from other areas.

Apart from shawl designs, Kerman rugs often have adaptations of the Boteh motif, naturalistic bunches of flowers or re-workings of classical carpet design. A wide range of delicate colours are used.
