HANDMADE RUG - Ziegler is the name of a design rather than an actual city or tribe. Ziegler design rugs are sometimes known as Chobi rugs or Peshawar rugs. A German company based in Manchester (England), Ziegler and Co. commissioned the development of the original Ziegler rugs back in 1883. Using leading designers and master weavers from Iran and Europe, Ziegler and Co. managed to create a design using softer palettes than those typically found in Persia. Ziegler rugs were designed with the western market in mind and fit perfectly into almost any home. Based on a softer version of the Sultanabad design their muted colours using vegetable dyes and simple, yet striking pattern fit well with modern neutral colour schemes and both contemporary or traditional furniture. The weaving of Zeigler rugs began in the Arak provence, however, they are now made all over the Persian region. Zeiglers have re-introduced vegetable dyes back into Persian & Oriental weaving after the popular use of chemical dyes since the start of the 20th century. Although their knot count is not generally high (around 80-120 KPSI), the hand-spun Ghazni or Himalayan wool used is of high quality and the structure very durable. Ziegler rugs are possibly the most popular and sought after handmade rugs in the UK due to their gentle tones and softer patterns - there are not many rooms that would not be improved by a Ziegler rug. HANDMADE RUG - Hamadan rugs are tribal hand woven rugs made in the city of Hamadan and its surrounding regions in western Iran. These rugs are woven from durable local wool and the colours are achieved mostly by using natural dyes. Most of the time Dark red and powerful blue predominate, with ivory as a contrasting colour. Other colours such as soft green, blue and brown are found in newer carpets. The patterns vary, with many geometric, floral and overall Herati designs being used. As these rugs are usually of tribal origin, some have a kilim flat woven end and one end with fringes. These are colourful hardwearing rugs that blend well with traditional and modern decors. Hamadan carpets are of excellent quality. They last long and keep their looks and colours. FREE DELIVERY ON THIS RUG within UK mainland.

HANDMADE RUG - Malayer is a town of southeast of Hamedan on the road to Arak. Its position in relation to these towns is significant, for its carpets exhibit characteristics of both Sarouk and Hamedan. Several villages in the area also produce rugs. Most Malayer rugs are single wafted; resulting in the white cotton warps being visible on the reverse. Unlike Hamedan rugs, which tend to be geometrical in design with large blocks of colour, Malayer rugs are more delicate, often with central medallions. The borders are particularly attractively drawn, often with a cluster of white motifs following the line of the main tendrils (or the outline of the central medallions) giving a lace effect. The village of Tafresh, to the northeast of Malayer in Arak province, produces similar carpets. Jozan and Manizan produce perhaps the best rugs in the Malayer area: they are double wafted and more rigid, using natural dyes. Only smaller sizes (Dozars, Zaronim and Pushtis) are produced. HANDMADE RUG - The Qashquai weave several types of rugs. A characteristic product can be recognized by its all-wool construction, heavy ribbing on the reverse, strong deep colours (particularly the red), and the use of traditional motifs such as the 'Hashing' or crab. Typically, the designs are geometrical with a row of three of five medallions down the middle of the rug, or in the centre and corners. The whole field is generally covered with small geometric motifs. Qashqai rugs average 70 to 170 knots per square inch. Though all traditional examples of Qashqai rugs have all wool construction including wool wefts and warps, newer village pieces may have cotton wefts and are generally more coarsely woven. The Qashquai are famous also for their artefacts: horse blankets, saddlebags, ropes, etc. The products of other tribes, such as the Khamseh and Lori, are often confused with those of the Qashquai.

Afghanistan is one of the leading producers of handmade rugs in the world. Afghan rugs are genuine, charming and usually phenomenally inexpensive. One of the most exotic and distinctive of all oriental rugs is the Shindand and Adraskan (named after local Afghan villages) woven in the Hairat area in western Afghanistan. Strangely elongated human and animal figures are their signature look. Most of the weavers in Afghanistan are the Ersari Turkman. But other smaller group such as Chub Bash and Kizil Ayaks are also in the line of weaving rugs. In addition Uzbeks, Kyrgyz, Kazakhs and Arabs label their rug according to their ethic group. Various and other natural dyes are used to produce the rich colours. As a chemical colour they use copper sulphate, ferrous sulphate, or tin and urine. Tribal rugs are almost always done on the horizontal or ground loom. This is due to the fact the nomads rarely remain in one location for more then two months. A Turkman woman will usually take at least six month to finish a rug 6 feet by 4 feet. The loom there fore can be set up and taken down four to six times before a rug or kelim is finished colour of Afghan rugs are mainly Reds (Madder-root of modern plant- ranges from reds to Orange and Purple. The carpets are fairly durable All Caucasian carpets are made with a Turkish or Giordes knot "Kazak" carpets are not from Kazakhstan but are from an area in what is now Armenia. A Shiraz Rug is a type of Persian rug made in the villages around the city of Shiraz, a city in the south west region of Persia, sited practically upon the old Persian Persepolis. The designs tend to come from settled tribal weavers so they mimic Qashqai, Khamseh, Afshar, Abadeh and Luri designs. Since the weavers are using fixed looms the rugs tend to be larger and often coarser than their tribal counterparts. Shiraz utilizes the Persian (asymmetrical) knot. The average knot count is around 120 KPSI. Shiraz rugs are not usually made in a large factory, with the majority of them being woven by home weavers and are woven on a cotton or wool foundation with a woollen pile. These nomadic rugs are almost always geometrical in style. Patterns tend to be small medallions or geometric figures scattered across the rugs. Strong reds and brown are the most typical colour of Shiraz rugs, they are extremely hard wearing and compliment wooden floors well. FREE DELIVERY ON THIS RUG within UK mainland.

They were traditionally more colorful than other southern Iranian pieces, the palettes of which were restricted to reds and dark blues. In recent years, the supply of Shekarlu rugs had become restricted. Then, in the 1960's and 70's, a new type of rug appeared on the market. These were Yalameh. They were as colorful as the Shekarlu rugs, but with a stronger emphasis on blues. The weave and designs are generally more regular than those of Sherkalu rugs. They share many of the characteristics of tribal pieces; made of 100% wool with a fondness for bright colour and geometrical designs. However the wool, though characteristically soft and lustrous, is machine spun and the colors show more variety than is usual for tribal rugs, with soft shades - of red, pink, blue green and yellow. All the motifs however are entirely traditional and all sizes are produced. Other weaving center which come within the general category of Yalameh are Shekarlu.

HANDMADE RUG - Sumak is a comparatively rare type of Kilim, deriving its name from the old town of SHEMAKJA. Sumak is NOT a Kilim. However, both have flat-woven style. Sumak has embroidered and its embroidery threads are not cut off at the back. Sumak has a shaggy, erratic collection of loose ends or strands of wool. The wefts strands (serving a decorative role rather than the structural role of knotted carpets) are threaded through a number of warp strands and then looped back. All Sumak have geometric pattern with many tribal motifs all around. Usually the motifs are small birds. Sumak are excellent with contemporary, traditional and modern decors.

HANDMADE RUG - NATURAL DYE Ziegler is the name of a design rather than an actual city or tribe. Semi-nomadic and settled tribesmen of Indo-European, probably Pashtun ancestry, who speak Farsi (Persian) and mainly inhabit western Afghanistan are addressed as Muashwanee. They are closely associated with an all-over scheme based on concentrically expanding hooked-diamonds or zigzags. Mushwanee rugs are generally of excellent quality and are very high in demand as they give a tribal look in the house and are ideal for the heavy foot traffic area, made with wool on wool embossed village design and are 100% hand knotted. In this rug the beautifully designed border with a decorative central pattern makes it really attractive. The colour of the rug brings a welcoming feeling. The brown colour goes really complimentary to the off white, beige and maroon colour on the rug. The price is very reasonable compare to the design and thought that has been put into it. The rug is worth the money because of the nice colour, velvety feel and natural softness. In this rug it is contrasted masterfully creating a uniformed geometric pattern around the central medalion. A fine Mushwani can evoke an essence of persian regalia and add a touch of eastern charm and class, though can also look quite fitting in a more humble and simpler decor. HANDMADE RUG - Afghanistan is one of the leading producers of handmade rugs in the world.
